RadioPhoenix.Org presents “The Moth Radio Hour”

Starting Tuesday, March 16, 2010, RadioPhoenix.Org will air five one-hour episodes of The Moth Radio Hour. Hailed by Garrison Keillor as “…the next big huge hit in public radio,” the series features true stories told in front of a live audience. Each episode mixes humorous, heartbreaking, and poignant tales that captivate audiences with their honesty and bravery.  Every episode presents a selection of the very best stories from The Moth, a New York City based non-profit which has been staging live storytelling shows since 1997.

Aired on over 212 stations across the country, RadioPhoenix.Org becomes the first station to bring The Moth Radio Hour to Arizona listeners. The program is produced by Jay Allison at Atlantic Public Media and distributed by PRX, the Public Radio Exchange.

If The Moth Radio Hour has sparked your interest in the art of storytelling, you can find out more about local Valley storytelling events by visiting the Facebook page of the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute.

The Moth Radio Hour, Episode 1

A batboy for the New York Yankees goes on a wild goose chase for a left-handed bat-stretcher; an Irish-Catholic family obsessed with the Kennedys dedicates a summer to spying on their idols; a comedian experiences the ultimate heartbreak; and a drill sergeant faints at the sight of blood.

The Moth Radio Hour, Episode 2

A severely stuttering child finds solace in speaking to animals and vows to speak for them if he grows up to find his voice. Years later we find him as the world's premier jaguar expert, having a face to face with an animal in the jungle of Belize. Plus, a Texas tale of moon pies and bedazzlers, and the surprising story of a Harlem man who ends up at a rodeo in Oregon.

The Moth Radio Hour, Episode 3

"We're grateful for The Moth...it'll make you laugh, it'll make you think" says Time Out magazine, and this hour is sure to do both. We'd be surprised if it didn't make you shed few tears as well. Hear how celebrated author and writer Adam Gopnik (Paris to the Moon, The New Yorker) embarrasses his son and offends other loved ones by getting lost in the new world of Instant Message abbreviations. Also, stories of first love and unlikely pen pals, and the sad tale of a gay man who comes out to his parents with dramatic consequences.

The Moth Radio Hour, Episode 4

This episode of The Moth Radio Hour includes stories from beloved author Malcolm Gladwell (Outliers, Blink, The Tipping Point) about a wedding prank gone horribly wrong; an African-American home care attendant caring for a dying Klansman; and a miracle survivor of a gang initiation.

The Moth Radio Hour, Episode 5

A man is instructed not to fall in love with his monkey, but fails; renowned performer Sarah Jones (Bridge and Tunnel) finds herself the subject of racial profiling; and the inventor of the Baby Calzone runs into trouble with the Mob.

Celebrating great record labels
Written by Monk
Thursday, 24 September 2009 18:09
You know Radio Phoenix is a big advocate of indie music. That is - music that's independently funded, recorded, distributed, marketed, etc. outside of the big, commercial machine. Not that there isn't amazing stuff coming from the big labels, but there's just so much creativity and originality coming from those DIY bands that find support in the smaller independent labels out in the world.

And competition? You may not know it, there's camaraderie like you wouldn't have guessed! Check out what one record label is doing:

A GREAT RECORD LABEL FOR EVERY LETTER
"Today at Asthmatic Kitty we are launching a new project we're calling "Labels by Alphabet"... Asthmatic Kitty is going to take the next few months to celebrate labels we feel have integrity and good taste... We want to acknowledge and honor folks who are doing things their own way and releasing music that is important for the world to hear... Supporting and promoting independent music in general is good not only for these other businesses but our own."
